Area of Expertise
Jail and Corrections Operations
Corrections environments present unique liability challenges that require highly specialized operational standards.
I hold POST Level III Corrections Master Instructor certification and I develop corrections instructors across the state. In a case that means three things. I look at custody procedures, and at whether the facility followed its own written policy. Then I look at the window an in-custody medical emergency has to be caught in, which is always narrower than people expect.
How I Review a Case
Corrections cases turn on records that are easy to overlook. I request the facility policy manual, post orders, housing and observation logs, restraint and cell extraction reports, incident video, medical call records, and training files for every deputy involved. Timing matters more here than in almost any other setting. I build a minute by minute timeline from those documents. Then I compare what staff did against the facility's own procedures and against accepted corrections practice. How long it took someone to recognize a medical emergency, and what they did next, gets the closest look.
What an Engagement Produces
Early on I can read the file and tell you where the exposure sits, or whether it sits anywhere at all. If the matter moves forward, I write a Rule 26 report addressing custody procedures, supervision, restraint application, and the medical response. From there I answer opposing expert opinions, sit for deposition, and testify.
- Custody procedures, restraint protocols, and cell extraction review.
- In-custody medical emergency response (CPR, AED, and Stop the Bleed protocols).
- Facility policy, SOP compliance, and inmate supervision standards.
